I’ve had more wonderful conversations exploring confidence this week :
Thank you all so much for sharing your experiences with me.
I occasionally happen on a confident woman who’s clear how good she is, with few qualms about taking her place in the world. But this is quite rare, I’m discovering.
You may well be surprised about that – unless your own inner voice is currently shouting ‘I told you others feel good about themselves, so there is clearly something wrong with you!’ In which case you understand how it happens and now you know you’re not the only one.
How courageous are we
Hearing so many stories of inner struggle, personal uncertainty and angst has made me realise just how courageous we are.
To the external eye, women are achieving well and pushing forward to excellence. The outputs speak for themselves and there are some really high performing females out there.
The internal experience is very different – wracked with doubt and uncertainty, all that evidence has little impact. There is real artistry in the range of dismissive comments that flow so easily from the lips! Mistresses of the undercut, we take the wind out of any sail that has the temerity to billow out in pride.
And yet, we keep going. Women are out there; we are achieving great things; so we must be working regularly outside of the comfort zone.
And that takes courage.
So the next time you diminish yourself and your achievements, take just a moment to consider the courage involved in the action you’re decrying. I don’t expect a lot – just a little smile will do – and then you can go back to the depleting dialogue if you want to!
In the meantime, I’ll carry on exploring and seeking understanding about the process, what we get from it and how we can change it.
If you’d like to take part, drop me a note or facebook me and I’ll get in touch. I’d love to hear your version of this process – both strong and depleting. Let’s knock this on the head together.
